Yorke Consulting is now offering a self-directed study with personal consultation to train facilitators for anger management and abuser/batterer intervention programs.  Many of the modules will meet requirements for Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, and Idaho, and other jurisdictions. The 40 hour program meets requirements for California.

This self-directed training covers the various State mandates needed to successfully run anger management and abuser intervention groups. The subject matter for the 30-hr and 40-hr training covers important domestic violence knowledge–focused on victim safety and offender accountability, with basic facilitation skill training. The 16-hr training covers important topics such as understanding of the nature of anger, anger management skills & concepts, utilization of anger log and the role of trigger thoughts, and an understanding of brain functioning, cognitive distortion, the role of communication and assertiveness, the role of empathy, the role of stress, and the role of consequences.

30-hr Basic Facilitator training modules cover the following: 

• Basic domestic violence knowledge focusing on victim impact, the effects on  children, predominant aggressor, coercive control, the Power & Control wheel, with an historical  overview of IPV, laws, criminal justice response and BIP origins.  (8 hours)
  
• Multicultural, cross-cultural, and multiethnic diversity and domestic violence.  (3 hours)
• Substance abuse and domestic violence with screening assessments.  (3 hours)
• Intake strategies, lethality assessment and utilizing measurements for change. (4 hours)
• Group content areas focusing on gender roles, conflict management, various types of abuse, cognitive distortions, criminal thinking and needs, with effective intervention strategies. (8 hours)
  
• Group facilitation, using adult learning styles, MI strategies to reduce resistance, fostering egalitarian relationships and approaches to evaluate positive change in clients. (4 hours)

40-hr training modules cover basic core training required by California PC 1203.098: 

• Basic domestic violence knowledge focusing on victim safety and the role of domestic violence shelters in a community-coordinated response (8 hours)
• Multicultural, cross-cultural, and multiethnic diversity and domestic violence (8 hours)
• Substance abuse and domestic violence (4 hours)
• Intake and assessment, including the history of violence and the nature of threats and substance abuse  (4 hours)
• Group content areas focusing on gender roles and socialization, the nature of violence, the dynamics of power and control, and the effects of abuse on children and others (8 hours)
• Group facilitation (4 hours)
• Domestic violence and the law, ethics, all requirements specified by the probation department (4 hours)

16-hr Anger Management training modules cover the following:

• Basic Group Facilitation- facilitation strategies for both small and large groups, understanding brain functioning, cognitive distortions, working with Precontemplative & Action stage clients in same group, adult learning styles, reducing resistance strategies, addressing substance abuse and other co-occuring issues, differences between batterer intervention & anger management interventions, using interactive strategies to increase learning and behavior changes (5 hours)
• Intake and Assessments- understanding the Readiness to Change model, dealing with resistance, best practices for modifications with female clients, utilizing measurements for change, measuring changes in emotional intelligence skills, exit interviews (3 hours)
• Managing Anger strategies- responsible time-outs, coping strategies, anger logs, & managing triggers, conflict management; building new neural pathways, breaking patterns & cycles of anger, from rumination to reappraisal, stress management (3 hours)
• Anger Management Curriculum content- anger education-the 4 components of the Anger Scale, contrasting protective vs destructive anger; flipping your lid; emotion wheel; healthy communication; personality awareness; strengthening empathy, the role of forgiveness, attachment styles, relationship repair strategies, boundary setting (5 hours)

Advanced Evidence-Based Strategies for Abuser Intervention Program Providers- A Fidelity Model

Over the past few decades, abuser intervention programs have evolved from shelter-based interventions, which grew out of the feminist movement in the Duluth Model, to a shift toward evidence-informed practice.  Research is showing increasing effectiveness with models that combine Duluth’s social justice framework with CBT, attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and neuroscience insights. 

Just because a curriculum claims to use CBT, trauma-informed, etc. doesn’t mean the fidelity, facilitator training, or evaluation is strong. Fidelity can be described as “how accurately a copy reproduces its source”—so how can newer facilitators replicate the model to achieve the advertised positive outcomes?  Our facilitator training emphasizes fidelity + flexibility, which is consistent with current best practice.

This advanced, 20-hr virtual workshop combines 16-hrs of LIVE training with a 4-hr component on a learning- management-system (LMS) to help equip group facilitators of the batterer intervention, anger management, parenting, and youth curriculum developed by Yorke Consulting to deliver the materials with confidence and fidelity to the model.  The training will cover the components of Duluth’s social justice framework with CBT, attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and neuroscience insights which are designed into the various curriculum versions.  We will examine how these evidence-based treatment strategies help us create an environment to increase engagement and reduce long-term recidivism thereby contributing to program success.

**Completion of the four-hour LMS component and quiz required for Another Way…Choosing to Change certification.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Evaluate 4 evidence-based facilitation strategies.
2. Analyze 4 program components included in effective BIP curriculum materials.
3. Assess 4 evidence-informed strategies to increase client engagement.
4. Evaluate learning styles of students and analyze how to implement in lesson materials.
5. Synthesize brain science principles and trauma-informed principles into delivery of identified lesson materials.
6. Adapt program and facilitator evaluations to their own needs
7. Assess when to implement corrective actions on non-compliant participants for maximum effectiveness.
8. Develop strategies to move clients from the survival brain to the learning brain.
9. Appraise batterer intervention research findings.
10. Contrast teaching vs facilitation techniques.
11. Evaluate victim-centered strategies to improve outcomes for long-term cessation of violence.

Advanced Facilitation: Addressing Attachment Issues in Batterer Intervention Programs

Over the past few decades, the influence of insecure attachment patterns in intimate partner abusers has been explored, yet this dynamic has not been incorporated into abuser intervention programming on a wide scale. When we examine the characteristics which describe the behaviors of those persons with dismissing, preoccupied, or fearful attachment styles, it easily corroborates many of the behaviors found in the clients who enter abuser intervention programs. Identifying the attachment style of the client could contribute to better program responsivity, which is consistent with research informed best practices.

This advanced, 8-hr, virtual workshop, designed for group facilitators of batterer intervention and anger management programs, will provide an overview of the attachment styles, both secure and insecure, and how they are revealed in the interpersonal offender population. We will examine how evidence-based treatment strategies help us create a secure base thereby contributing to increased engagement and reduced long-term recidivism. Participants will gain practical tools to address attachment-related challenges in batterer intervention programs (BIPs) and promote healthier relationship dynamics.

Upon completion of the workshop participants will be able to:
1. Explain the connection between attachment theory and abusive behaviors in intimate partner relationships.
2. Identify common attachment styles and how they manifest in individuals who engage in acts of violence.
3. Recognize maladaptive coping mechanisms linked to insecure attachment and their role in relationship dynamics.
4. Utilize facilitation strategies to help clients explore their attachment history and its impact on their behaviors.
5. Apply intervention techniques that promote accountability while addressing attachment-related resistance.
6. Incorporate attachment-focused discussions into BIP and Anger Management curricula to enhance client self-awareness and behavior change.

Participants will be provided with a reproducible lesson which address’ attachment and its role in violence reduction.

Advanced Facilitation: Addressing Stalking Behaviors in Batterer Intervention Programs

Research shows that Stalking is far more prevalent within domestic violence relationships than what is captured by arrest statistics; yet, when not accounted for, can lead to greater perpetration of violence and lethality.

This advanced, 8-hr, virtual workshop, designed for group facilitators of batterer intervention and anger management programs, explores the intersection of stalking behaviors and violence, equipping facilitators with the knowledge and skills to identify, address, and intervene in stalking-related behaviors. Participants will learn intervention techniques, facilitation strategies, and ways to incorporate stalking-specific content into abuser intervention programs.

Upon completion of the workshop participants will be able to:
1. Define and identify stalking behaviors commonly exhibited by individuals in abuser intervention programs.
2. Explain the psychological and emotional motivations behind stalking behaviors.
3. Recognize cognitive distortions and minimization strategies used by offenders to justify stalking.
4. Utilize intervention techniques to challenge denial, increase accountability, and reduce stalking behaviors.
5. Apply structured facilitation techniques to manage discussions around stalking safely and effectively.
6. Incorporate stalking-specific content into existing curricula while maintaining a trauma-informed approach.
Participants will be provided with a reproducible lesson which address’ stalking and how to reduce stalking beliefs and behaviors in clients.
