Advanced Training: From Compliance to Change

From Compliance to Change: Creating the Conditions for Authentic Change in BIPs
This interactive 8-hour advanced training examines change as a process rather than an event. In Part 1, facilitators will explore readiness for change, barriers to engagement, motivational interviewing strategies, and practical ways to help externally motivated participants move toward greater insight, personal responsibility, and internal motivation. Part 2 focuses on recognizing authentic change versus simple compliance. Participants will learn to identify meaningful indicators of accountability, empathy, behavioral consistency, and sustained change—and distinguish participants who have learned the right answers from those who are actually changing how they think, respond, and relate to others. Facilitators will leave with practical strategies for creating conversations that encourage change and a clearer framework for answering a critical question in batterer intervention: “How do we know when someone is really changing?” CEs are available for purchase.
From Compliance to Change: Creating the Conditions for Authentic Change in BIPs
Completing a batterer intervention program is not the same as changing. A participant can attend every session, complete every assignment, learn the language of accountability—and still retain the beliefs, attitudes, and relationship behaviors that contributed to abuse. At the same time, facilitators may become frustrated when participants enter treatment defensive, externally motivated, minimizing their behavior, or simply doing what is necessary to satisfy the court.
So how do facilitators create conditions that encourage meaningful change—and how do we know when that change is actually occurring?
This interactive 8-hour advanced training examines change as a process rather than an event. In Part 1, participants will explore readiness for change, barriers to engagement, motivational interviewing strategies, and facilitator practices that help move externally motivated participants toward greater introspection, personal responsibility, and internally motivated change. Research with IPV offenders suggests that readiness matters and that participants at different stages may respond differently to intervention approaches. Motivational approaches are particularly relevant because many BIP participants enter treatment under external pressure rather than from an internal desire to change.
Part 2 moves from facilitating change to evaluating change. Participants will examine the critical difference between program compliance and authentic behavioral change. Using indicators of accountability, responsibility, empathy, behavioral consistency, relationship behavior, and maintenance of change, facilitators will practice distinguishing participants who have learned the right answers from those demonstrating meaningful changes in how they think, respond, and relate to others.
Participants will leave with practical strategies for facilitating conversations that evoke change rather than demand it—and a clearer framework for answering one of the most important questions in batterer intervention:
“How do we know when someone is really changing?”
Objectives-
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate the stages of behavioral change and identify participant statements and behaviors consistent with precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.
- Identify at least three barriers to participant engagement related to program/referral factors, facilitator practices, and participant characteristics.
- Demonstrate at least three motivational strategies for reducing resistance, exploring ambivalence, developing discrepancy, and increasing internally motivated reasons for non-abusive behavior.
- Differentiate compliance indicators from authentic change indicators in participant statements, assignments, group interactions, and relationship behavior.
- Identify at least five behavioral indicators of increasing accountability, including decreased minimization/blaming, recognition of patterns of abusive behavior, acceptance of consequences, empathy for impact on others, and use of non-abusive alternatives.
- Apply a structured change-assessment framework to case examples to evaluate readiness, accountability, behavioral change, and areas requiring continued intervention.
