Beyond the Behavior: Understanding the Motivations, Mindsets, and Intervention Needs Behind IPV
This advanced virtual workshop is divided into two 4-hr training days to maximize learning and application. Day 1-“Understanding Motivation in IPV” covers the foundational level for distinguishing the behavior from the motivation and mindset behind their choice to be abusive. Day 2-“Matching Intervention to Motivation” will cover advanced facilitation strategies for tailoring interventions to the individual’s needs. We will examine women’s use of force and briefly discuss the early formation of relationship beliefs. By the end of the 8-hour course, participants will gain critical knowledge and skills to help move clients beyond only changing the behavior to helping them change the thinking that keeps fueling their abusive choices. CEs are available for purchase.
Beyond the Behavior: Understanding the Motivations, Mindsets, and Intervention Needs Behind IPV
Why do people use violence in intimate relationships—and does the motivation behind the behavior matter when deciding how to intervene?
Beyond the Behavior challenges facilitators to look beneath the abusive act and examine the beliefs, emotions, expectations, relationship dynamics, and desired outcomes that may be driving it. Participants will explore several motivational patterns associated with intimate partner violence, with particular attention to men who batter, while also examining women’s use of force and selected developmental considerations in teen dating violence.
Using practical applications from Another Way…Choosing to Change, participants will learn to distinguish behavior from motivation, explanation from excuse, and emotional distress from entitlement or coercive control. Through case analysis, cognitive-behavioral strategies, facilitated questioning, and skill-building exercises, attendees will practice moving clients from justification and blame toward insight, accountability, healthier beliefs, and nonviolent relationship behaviors.
This advanced workshop is especially valuable for facilitators who have completed—or are considering completing—the Hybrid Fidelity Training, where the foundational facilitation principles and intervention strategies underlying Yorke Consulting curricula are explored in greater depth.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least four motivational patterns associated with intimate partner violence and describe behavioral and cognitive indicators associated with each.
- Differentiate among triggers, emotions, stated reasons, underlying motivations, and abusive beliefs when evaluating participant behavior.
- Analyze IPV scenarios using behavior, context, motivation, mindset, intended outcome, and victim impact to develop more targeted intervention strategies.
- Distinguish coercive or controlling violence from self-protective, resistive, retaliatory, or emotionally reactive uses of force, particularly when assessing women referred to intervention programs.
- Apply at least three cognitive-behavioral, motivational, or skill-building strategies from Another Way…Choosing to Change to challenge abusive thinking and promote healthier replacement beliefs and behaviors.
- Develop facilitator questions and interventions that promote self-reflection, personal responsibility, empathy, and nonviolent relationship choices without colluding with excuses or minimizing abuse.
